DO CLOTHES INSTIGATE RAPE?

If clothes instigate rape, then there is one questioning that, “Why are kids raped in the country then? What kind of provocative clothes do they wear? Why are Muslim women hidden behind burqas raped? It’s high time, we admit that a sexual assault on a woman has nothing to do with the kind of clothes she wears. It’s the intent of the men concerned.

There was a time when Indian women couldn’t even think of wearing anything other than a sari – forget about low-waist jeans and tank tops. We still had men raping brutally raping women in those days. Here, I would like to state and example of Aruna Shanbaug., who is on vegetative state for the last 37yrs after being raped by a male sweeper during her late night shift in KEM hospital. What kind of skimpy clothes was she wearing? If the society can’t handle a mix of culture and western clothes on women, do not accuse women of instigating men to commit a heinous crime like rape. It is the thought process that needs to be revolutionized. Why are always women only told to wear certain clothes to prevent rape? I haven’t ever heard anyone telling men to not rape? I haven’t ever heard anyone telling men to control their emotions?

Art.21 of the Constitution of India guarantees the right to life and personal liberty. It also guarantees right to live life with dignity. Globally, Constitutions recognize the sanctity of life, yet have failed to adequately protect the life of a woman. Art.14 of the Indian Constitution also provides right to equality. If this right to equality is guaranteed to every citizen of India, then why the burden of wearing right clothes is only on women? Why are always women only told to stay in their limits? Why aint men ever told to not cross their limits and respect women?

Ironically, all this is happening in a country where the girl is seen as an incarnation of goddess “Laxmi”. This is the glaring truth of India. A girl is raped and policemen ask her details of rape….? Rape...
