1. What type of team was formed here? Was it necessary, in your opinion?

The shipping industry accounting team is a virtual team. It is included accountants with expertise in the shipping industry, so in some ways it is homogeneous. It is a virtual team because the members are located in four different geographic regions across the U.S. They work across space that involved e-mailing each other about new contracts and prospective clients. They exchange information and discuss about strategies by communicating through email and telephone.

In terms of whether it was necessary or not, I think it is not necessary for some reasons. Each office service different regions in US. They had an existing client base and prospects. The firms in the same regions would be essential for establishing accounting relationships that would benefit from face-to-face interactions. It takes much more time to exchange information and work together.

2. Use the team effectiveness model to identify the strengths and weaknesses of this team’s environment, design, and processes.

Team environment

* Weaknesses: there is little in the environment to promote the functioning of the team. The case suggests that rewards are individual and each team member is geographically very distant from the other team members. One member in the team has different time, so it is difficult for the communication. It reduce effective of work.

* Strengths are that the team members are all shipping industry accounting experts in other regions. They can share experiences and helpful information...
