Summary
The subject article reported on a qualitative study conducted to determine how Japanese families of children with disabilities interpret the meaning of family-professional partnerships. Data were collected based on focus groups and interviews with thirty mothers of children with disabilities. Participants were sampled from three different locations and the authors provided details on the underlying themes that were identified by the participant’s feedback.
Type of Qualitative Study
Based on the methods and purpose of the research cited in the article, it appears that the researchers conducted a type of ethnographic study, as defined by Brantlinger and colleagues (2005). The researchers focused on Japanese families with disabled children, using focus groups and interviews as the primary source of data.
Credibility Measures
In regards to the credibility measures as identified by Brantlinger (2005) the researchers noted several methods for ensuring their reports were credible and reliable. First, the authors provided a thick, detailed description of the participants and their methods for collecting data. They noted the benefit of choosing three locations for data gathering and cited references for the type of sampling strategy used to select participants. In addition, data and methodological triangulation was used to compare results from the different sites and participants. An audit trail was conducted by an external researcher to assess data validity and dependability. The first author of the study fully participated in the audit trail process and the external auditor determined that the study was reliable and substantiated.
