Course Description:
The purpose of this course is to explore theoretical frame works for conceptualizing self-defense practice on a college campus and in the community settings. Students will learn basics regarding various criminological theories as well as environmental systems theories to enhance their ability to be self-aware and decrease their attractiveness to others who may pose a risk of harm. Additionally this course will offer students a chance to practice basic physical defense techniques and to begin developing their own personal defense plan.
Course Objectives:
1. Increase awareness of individual interactions with the environment, with other persons, and with institutions that can increase safety factors for personal safety.
2. Learn introductory physical techniques to employ in the event that students are at risk.
3. Participate in an activity to promote physical fitness.

Course Format:
The course will be conducted as a hybrid course with components online as well as in the classroom. Online sessions will include support from Blackboard and different activities and discussions. In class will be a seminar format class for exploring and applying the various content areas. Additionally this course will have a physical element for practicing some of the techniques.
Discussion Boards:
