English as a Global Language

Does globalizing the English language create the paradigm of bilingualism which will inevitably strengthen connectivity between individuals of different ethnic backgrounds while also having positive rippling effects on the economic standpoint of the world? My prediction is that though there are positive effects of globalizing the English language, past events will support the notion that this globalization may cause issues of hegemony in the future. I developed an interest in this topic after reading, “English as a Global Language” by Crystal David. In this research paper I seek to explore the ways that globalization will not only benefit the American public but also the ways in which foreigners can use their new found knowledge to their advantage. I also want to explore the extent to which people are willing to embrace this notion of globalizing English and the price they are willing to pay to see this happened.

In his book Crystal explains how the English language is spreading gracefully around the world. Though not everyone shares this promotional view of the expansion of English, many see the spread of the language as yet another way Americans are forcing their culture on the rest of the world. He stresses on the many challenges associated with learning a new language that will deter people from accepting this idea of globalizing English. The idea of a utopia with no language barriers is beautiful but society as it is may not be prepared for such a union. Crystal presents the question “What are the advantages and the disadvantages of a global language?” Although I did not finish reading the entire book, my response to the few pages I read will be that Crystal has a negative connotation about globalizing the English language.
