Effective Communication

Within the criminal justice organization, communication is a key aspect in how officers and other personnel effectively perform their duties. With effective communication many positions are held accountable for how the department is run. Ineffective communication could cause potential unrest among the staff as well as the inmates that are being house within the penal community. A speaker’s demeanor as well as body language could hamper in any understanding that is being delivered. Effective communication should be involved in every daily aspect of the criminal justice organization.

With the process of verbal and nonverbal communication, listening and hearing play a major role in how communication is perceived in an audience (Miller, L.S. & Whitehead, J.T., 2011). With verbal communication, the person that is speaking must be clear and calm. Also the speaker should use basic etiquette when trying to verbally communicate among a group of their peers (Miller, L.S. & Whitehead, J.T., 2011). The speaker’s voice and appearance can reveal intimate details in the speaker’s personal history. In the process of nonverbal communication, the use of facial expressions and body language relay what the speaker is trying to get across what need to be communicated. Nonverbal communication, also allow the speaker to effectively deliver or convey an emotional state or relationship between individuals. In addition, nonverbal communication can rectify what has been spoken (Wallace, H. & Roberson, C., 2009). Eye contact can also aid in effective communication when speaking to a crowd or audience.
