Please write a two hundred word essay describing ethnography and distinguish it from other forms of research in the chapter. Give examples of the kind of knowledge gained and the value of ethnography.

There are many types of research that Anthropologists use and they can be classified into two general criteria and that is the analysis of a single society or the analysis of a worldwide sample of societies. Ethnography is “...a description and analysis of a single society” (Ember, 38) after an anthropologist has done the field work required. The second type of research is “Within Culture Comparisons. This type of research the ethnographer tests theories within one society, community, or districts. The next research is “Regional Controlled Comparisons” this is where anthropologists compare the ethnographic information obtained from societies found in a particular region. The next research is “Cross Cultural Research” which is where “... Anthropologists can generate interpretation on the basis of worldwide comparisons by looking for differences between those societies”(Ember, 40). This uses the ethnographic information of the single societies buy combines them into a world wide group to compare. The final research type is “Historical Research” which uses Ethnohistory which is the study based on descriptive materials about a single society at more than one point in time. The kind of knowledge gained from ethnography from the example in this book Anthropologists gained good information on how people in the past may have harvested fish by analyzing different pieces of information from a variety of sources.
