There are many different roles money can play. Money can take a toll on people emotionally. Money also has different meanings to different people. Some use money to gain power or to become a status symbol. Most of all money is the main focus for life in general. In the movie, The Italian Job, money is used as all these things. A few characters steal to get the money and one steals it away. The money ends up in good hands and is used to purchase material things. The three roles that money plays are as a matter, means, and measure. Throughout the movie money changes hands, pushes people apart, and even brings people closer. Either way, money is a lifeline.

In the movie, The Italian Job, money is in the physical form of gold bricks. More specifically, the gold bricks have an engraving of a Balinese dancer on them. The characters in the movie classify themselves as thieves. In the very beginning of the movie, the whole scheme is shown. The plan to steal the safe that contains the gold bricks is thought through and every detail is described right down to how many minutes there is in between tasks. The gold bricks influence the movie greatly. The characters scheming to obtain the bricks want them because they are rare. The characters do not seem to be in financial strain. It would appear that the characters just want the gold bricks to purchase expensive items. The characters in the movie also seem to be very relaxed at all times. They never panic and they know exactly what they want and they know how to get it without any one getting hurt. Money plays an important role in the movie. The whole movie is about the gold bricks. Of course the gold bricks also make some of the characters greedy. When something rare is out there, there is always at least one person that will do anything and everything to obtain this rare item.
