Criminal Justice Counseling Process

Criminal Justice counselors plays a major part in the field of Criminal Justice. From the very beginning to the end of the offender the process. Criminal justice counselor must be able to establish a relationship with the offender from the very start. This well give the offender the ability to see if this will be valuable and successful counseling relationship.

At the beginning of counseling process foundation and expectation requirements between the counselor/offender has to be set. This will show the offender what will be used and will understand the purpose of the counseling. Upon the first contact the counselor responsibility is to explain the reason for the session as well as go over all rules, condition of probation, parole and policy for that agency that the counselor represents. The counselor need to be completely clear, simple and directly explain their role in a genuine and non-phony way. Counselors need to be sure that the offender is included throughout this entire procedures. Counselor need to eliminate ambiguities and set limits, ask for feedback, keep notes (mental) about the offender interaction, strengths, weakness. Upon start of the session the counselor should focus on three main concerns (1) to develop a workable counseling relationship (2) develop an accepting tolerant atmosphere (3) to empower the offender by showing them confidence in the ability to solve their problems. Resistant of the offender may come about and must be dealt with very quickly if not the offender may try to damage the ability to receive help from the counselor. Counselors must have a contract with the offender this contract is used to commit to work on specific counseling goals, establish and defines the counselor/offender relationships.
