Cunha, John P. "Low Blood Pressure." Ed. Jay The Hot Tub Homicide

1. The paramedics made several observations at the crime scene. One of the first things that they noticed was that empty bottles of wine were on the ledge surrounding the hot tub. They also noticed that the water happened to be extremely hot when they climbed in to drag the bodies out. Another piece of evidence that was noted was that the couple had been dead for quite some time.

2. I think that the investigators should first ask the maid about the relationships that the couple had with other people. They should try to find out things from the maid like whether or not they could have possibly had any enemies that could have been looking for revenge or money. If there were any enemies, they could end up being possible suspects. They should also question the maid about how frequently the couple drank or how often they went into the hot tub. Any information that suggests abnormal behavior could prove that it’s a homicide and point them in the direction of a killer.

3. The first physiological effect that comes to mind in this situation would be the effects of alcohol on the human body. It was reported that there were bottles of wine surrounding the hot tub. Alcohol effects several physiological functions in the brain, heart, and liver ("Alcohol's Effects on the Body"). Another factor in this situation that could have physiological effects is the high temperature of the hot tub water. High water temperatures cause the body to pump blood faster to release heat as the blood gets closer to the skin’s surface so that the core temperature can return to normal. As time passes, the warm blood causes the blood vessels to dilate, lessening the resistance to blood flow and dropping the blood pressure ("Hot Water Physiology").

4. These physiological effects could have contributed to the Underhill’s death due to the mix of alcohol and the high temperature of the hot...
