Security Controls

Security of information and business data should always be a high level priority and concern. "Security is primarily the responsibility of the operations group, which consist of the staff responsible for installing and operating security controls such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and routine backup and recovery operations" (Dennis, Wixom, & Roth, 2009). Developers and programmers also play a large part in ensuring information systems are secure.

Data: Company financial data should be kept confidential and secure with only those having a need to know basis access. Policies, employee data, procedures and business financial data are data that help maintain and grow the company and should be protected. Most of these items are proprietary information that require data encryption and password protection to control authorized access. Data placed in the wrong hands could be detrimental to the company.

“Lawsuits alone would easily exceed $10 million and the cost of staff to find and reenter paper records would be enormous and certainly would take more than a few weeks" (Dennis, Wixom, & Roth, 2009).

Processes: Often times, using a third party application process can benefit a company. Riordan Manufacturing would have greater guaranteed security by using COTS. By implementing COTS, Riordan Manufacturing will be able to save time and money because the program is already established and training services can be provided. If this third party option is not financially fit, other in-house programs or application processes could be developed.
