World War I saw the first use of chemical weapons, particularly poison gas. Poisonous gases such as chlorine and mustard gas posed new threats to soldiers. These gases could blind, burn, or kill people exposed to them. Naval warfare entered a new dimension in World War I—underwater. German forces used U-boats equipped with torpedoes and guns to sink Allied ships and also, the United States started to use it because it was a good method to surprise the others. The U.S. Army and Navy created a nursing corps that formally admitted women to the military for the first time. As many as 21,000 women joined one of these Nurse Corps and served overseas. Many of the U.S. military's nurses came from the ranks of the American Red Cross. This organization operated hospitals in Europe. It was a great advance for the women because, some years ago, here or in Germany, for example, it couldn’t be possible. The experience it wasn’t very good because, for example, in Hungary if you were a Jewish, they kill you and the relathionship it wasn’t vey good because that fight two different breeds together not be looked very well as happen in the past between black and white people.
