Case Background:

The leadership in this action case is about a family owned and run business with a leader whose name is Ratan Tata and his leadership skills. It also speaks about the company and its employee. It also speaks about it culture and diversity and where people came from. They also talk about the compassion and caring nature of the employees.

1. What are the characteristics of Tata’s leadership?

According to the article, it states that Ratan Tata is reputed to be a good listener while also able to express his own view. The article also states that he is a motivator; he does not discourage people who fail to deliver. Instead he thinks big and encourages people to do the same. Another key characteristic is that Tata never stop learning and he maintained that relationship with people who aid learning.

2. To what extent do you think culture plays a role?

As we all know, India is known for cultures and religion based on value of integrity, hospitality, humility and kindness and ideals from family. Culture is not just about how people act. It’s about attitude, beliefs and values. I believed that having a company with people who have great attitude and strong values any company could reach great heights. Growing up in the West Indies, we have strong values and beliefs that we live by on a day to day basis. For example respecting elders, there is hardly any of that today.

3. Can this management style be implemented elsewhere?

From my personal opinion, yes this style could be implemented. It just needs to be following through. I am pretty sure that no employee wants a boss who they cannot talk to, or afraid to talk to. People should be able to voice their opinion. Employees want to be treated with respect. They want to appreciate; it’s not always about getting a fat bonus. Sometimes just a simple thank you can be a big motivator. So yes if managers and leaders...
