Motivational Theories and Motivational Plan

As a leader of an educational organization, employing faculty, staff, and students to collaborate and conquer the school’s missions is a difficult task. Extensive demands of jobs within the education field, continuous evolution of the profession itself and the people we service, different personalities, experiences, and levels of expertise combine to form opinions and professional views which could cause members of the organization to either conjoin or clash. Additionally, school missions and school strategic plans require extended periods of time to accomplish. Consistent dedication and cooperation from all members are necessary for its mastery. Considering the factors relating to the effective operation of an educational organization, motivation is an essential skill the school administrator must possess to inspire stakeholders to achieve the desired results. Prior to creating a motivation plan, different human motivation theories and models are considered to determine which motivational theory or theories will work best for their educational organization.

Motivation is described as one of four human relation categories used to analyze behaviors manifested by employees in the work place. Moreover, motivation and behavior are directly related since the two are “connected through [a person’s] needs and wants (desires).” Needs create tension, tension creates wants and desires, which are used as positive and negative incentives to produce a certain response or action. The action is directed toward the accomplishment or satisfaction of the needs (Davis, 1967; Halloran, 1978; Sanford, 1977).” (Razik & Swanson 2010) Motivation and incentives, as related to the workplace, are formulated based on what an employee needs or wants from their leader or employer.
