There are several reasons in support of Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb in 1945. One of the most significant reasons involves the amount of power the United States proved it had to other countries, specifically the Soviet Union. This was such a powerful weapon and sent shock waves across the nation. The Soviet Union was gaining much support throughout Europe, and the atomic bomb sent a message to the world that the United States is a county to fear and acknowledge. This was especially true with a leader such as Stalin of the Soviet Union. The atomic bomb was the statement he needed in order for him to stop any further plans he had for World War II.

This also brings up the idea of communism spreading which is a scary thought. It is very possible that if no action was taken by the United States, the war would have progressed which could have led to communism spreading even to the United States. By dropping the bomb, the United States put a halt to the war which was necessary for an end to come. Some may argue that this was not the right way to assert our power, suggesting that it would have been just as effective to invade Japan with our army. The problem with that suggestion is that if the United States were to do that, millions of Americans lives would have been lost, and the chance of success would not have been as great.

The next important point regarding the atomic bomb and the power behind it is that its use showed the world what extreme effects it has on only one nation, but the entire world. The amount of lives that can be taken in such a small amount of time is huge. This was an educational opportunity for all nation leaders, making the statement that the atomic bomb is something to be used only when absolutely necessary and for the right reasons. While many may say the United States didn’t do it for the right reasons, regardless the atomic bombing taught the world of its power and also the power of the United States.
