SPORT MEDIA AND PUBLIC RELATIONS IN SPORT

Background and Facts

The 13/05/2012, Juventus captain and striker Alessandro Del Piero played his last match at Juventus Stadium against Atalanta, ending a 19 year old relationship with the Italian football club.

The 37 year old Del Piero is the leading all- time scorer of the club with 289 goals, being selected by the national team 91 times, scoring 27 goals.

Although the fans have tried to persuade the club to keep Del Piero for another season, it was clear that the decision was already confirmed, and there was no space for turning back.

"He will always be our captain," said the club's president, Andrea Agnelli, at full-time, but what really hurts is the realization that this cannot be the case. Everybody was conscious that his departure meant an end of an era, both in the teams history and in the Juventus fans lives.

However, the player has always manifested the firm intention to continue his football career seeking for a fascinating opportunity abroad. After a long summer spent through rumors linking the free agent striker to premier league clubs such as Liverpool and Southampton, to champions League clubs such a Celtic and Braga and the Swiss club Sion, Del Piero signed a two-years (one year plus option for the second) deal with the Australian football club Sydney FC Sky Blues.

The deal is reportedly worth $2 million per season, which would make Del Piero the highest paid athlete in the Australian’s four football codes, including rugby league, rugby union and Australian rules.
