Executive Summary

Coach P., the coach of the Army Crew team for the United States Military Academy at West Point, coaches two rowing teams, Varsity and Junior Varsity (JV). The superior eight rowers are a part of Varsity team, whereas eight rowers with slightly less capabilities w.r.t. individual power and strength form the JV team. Though Coach P. believes that Varsity team should easily outplay JV, they are constantly being overshadowed and outplayed by JV team. It’s a game of synchronization between team members and even one member can hamper the performance of the entire team. Coach P. devoted significant time and efforts to identify the weak links in the Varsity team, however all of tests demonstrated that the Varsity team consists of the best eight members. After putting in all the efforts and waiting for the time to come when Varsity team members start performing as a team, Coach P. was not left with many other options before the start of the National championship race apart from the following:

* Promoting the JV team to the Varsity boat or rather switch the titles

* Swap some members in both the teams

* Keeping the current team, but enhancing the performance of the Varsity team

Team Overhauling

The Varsity team members were not behaving as a unit and that was hurting the most while trying to put them together to contribute to a winning cause. The functionality of the team had to be changed, confidence in each other had to be rekindled and they had to me groomed to trust rather than pin pointing each other.
