Executive Summary

Java was never intended to be quite what it became. It grew out of a project at Sun Microsystems to build the “Star7,” a special type of personal digital assistant (PDA) that was intended to control all the electronic devices in the home. (Parsons, 2012) From humble beginnings, it has become one of the key ­technologies of global software development. (Parsons, 2012) I will go on to discuss: What is Java, the Beginning of Java, Java Popularity, and last but not least Java Characteristics. Today Java is one of the most used computer programing systems.

What is Java?

Java is a programming language that allows software to run unchanged on any kind of computer. (Anyomous, 2001) It brings stodgy World Wide Web pages to life with dancing type, animated cartoon characters and lifelike simulations. It's the first language designed to function over a network. And it has built-in safeguards against viruses, which makes it a lot safer to download code from the Internet. (Babcock, 1996) Originally conceived as an embedded language for consumer devices, Java emerged from Sun Microsystems in 1995 as the programming language for Web browsers. (Binstock, 2005)

It is hard to picture our world without the Internet, but at one point it didn’t exist. Since 1995, Java has changed our world and our expectations forever. In 1991, a small group of Sun engineers called the "Green Team" believed that the next wave in computing was the union of digital consumer devices and computers.
