Wilmington University is required by federal law to protect student’s information, financial information and education records. This policy includes rules and guidelines for acceptable use of the university network, information on securing your computer and the penalties on violating policies. It is a privilege to have access granted to the campus network you must follow the policy in order to retain that privilege. Please note that this policy applies to all wireless devices using the schools network. The steps that the University takes to protect your information are just a beginning. You must also take steps to protect your information, your computer, and other devices that you connect to the Internet.

Students should secure your computer

You are responsible for securing your computer, smart phone, and tablet from malicious software created by cyber criminals. Hackers want to steal your personal information for identity theft, or hijack your computer or email account to attack others. To prevent danger, you should:

·         Verify the hyperlinks within electronic communication. This can usually be done by hovering a mouse cursor over links to view the true URL, although this is not a sure-fire solution, as links can be masked.

·         Remain cautious about opening electronic communication attachments and or downloading files from electronic communication. If the message is suspect or not from a known source, at a minimum files should be scanned by antivirus program.    

 Never send personal or financial information via electronic communication, and only provide personal or financial information through an organization's website once it has been reviewed to ensure its legitimacy

* Update your computer's software with the latest security patches.

* Install and update virus protection software.
