INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the book The Bible Among the Myths by John Oswalt. The book is divided into two parts. The first five chapters clarify the difference between myths and scripture. The following five chapters study the bond between history and the Bible. Each chapter will receive a summary overviewing the author’s thoughts. The summary will include the book’s introduction and conclusion.

SUMMARY OF INTRODUCTION

Oswalt opens his book by introduction himself as a person who teaches on the subject of the bible and myths of the ancient near east at varies seminaries. Oswalt demands the acknowledgment and justification of the historic and theological reliability of the Old Testament scriptures. Oswalt indicates the numerous changes that have taken place within the Israelite religion in relationship with other Semitic religions. Many considered the Israelite’s religion too similar to other surrounding cultures to consider it different. Oswalt references past scholars such as W. F. Albright, G. E. Wright, and Karl Barth along with the discoveries of...
