REFLECTION PAPER (2)

1.What values, experiences and influences that you get from your family affect you today ?

The values that were imparted to me that have greatly affected my life include the need to measure success with hard work. One can not achieve this state by mere luck or twist of fate. Constant accounts of my parents would rattle through my brain of how they were able to finish college by being working students. My mom being a seamstress, was able to become a public school teacher by way of countless hours of working by day and studying at night. My father on the other hand worked as a customs security guard till he was able to finish law school.

Experiences in the past has taught me to adjust to life’s challenges and trials. I can cite the way I was raised, my dad died when I was just so it was just my mom who reared me through college. I would always be envious of families who were complete with both parents and those affluent ones who can get whatever they want in life. I had a restrictive mother who never allowed me to go on camping, field trips and parties. I knew where she was coming from. This taught me how to value my time, read, study and sometimes help in the house hold chores and even doing the laundry. At this juncture, I knew far and wide I matured much faster than my peers and already had a different outlook in life.

Experiences in handling an organization in college also brought in me the dictum on how to handle all sorts of people. How to address people with all sorts of strengths, hang ups, whims, and preferences. Add also the different social classes. This has helped me a lot.

Lastly, one influence that has affected me in the past that probably still resonates in me now is my mom’s penchant to borrow money left and right. The setting back then probably laid out for us was of hand to mouth existence and that borrowing money was not bad per se as long as you are able to repay them.
