1. What were the reasons the bomb should have been used on Japan?

- One of the reasons the atomic bomb should have been used on Japan is when Japan launched a surprise attack on American land.

On December 7, 1941 Japan surprisingly flew into the naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and destroyed many of the U.S. ships and fighter planes. Japans attack on Pearl Harbor killed nearly 2,500 U.S. men and wounded nearly 1,000 U.S. men. Another reason the Atomic bomb should have been used on Japan is President Truman thought that the Atomic Bomb was a way to get the Japanese to surrender.

The 1st Atomic bomb was dropped on august 6, 1945 killing about 50,000 people and destroyed much of the city of Hiroshima. Japan did not surrender after the 1st Atomic bomb. On august 9, 1945, three days after the 1st atomic bomb and Japan not surrendering a second atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki killing about 40,000 people.

2. What were the reasons the bomb should not have been used on Japan?

- Many thought that Japan was close to defeat and for that reason they thought the use of the atomic bomb was unnecessary.

Once the Soviet Union declared war many thought Japan would surrender and the atomic bomb would not be needed.

The atomic bomb has never been used before and many were worried what effects it would have for the future humanity. Admiral William Leahy stated “wars cannot be won by destroying women and children.”

The atomic bomb killed many innocent people including women and children upon impact and would have long lasting effects for decades as many Japanese people died of radiation sickness and related illnesses.
