Chapter 15 – Dynamics of Leadership

1. Think of a leader that you know. Give examples of how this person influences others using formal authority, expertise, rewards, coercion, and charisma. How do you think people generally respond to these different influence tactics? Explain.

Leader: Store Manager from my last job.

Examples how they influence others: The store manager influences others by using his charisma, rewards, and formal authority.

For example he would use his charisma with employees when he would want them to stay overtime at work. He would put on this face that no one could resist. I laugh now looking back because he is genuinely a nice guy but would often use this expression to get you to do what he wanted.

Now he would use his formal authority when he had a problem with an employee coming in to work when scheduled. I witnessed many times employees being written up because they failed to come in on their scheduled days or were no call no shows.

Finally, he would use rewards to convince us to drive sales. Every time we would get so many people to sign up for our rewards card he would bring pizza for the employees. He used this method often to get us to keep our sales goals and push our reward cards.

How people respond? Explain: When it came to formal authority people would normally get their act together and come to work on time and on days they were scheduled. He was pretty easy going but sometime he had to use his authority to get the job done. The rewards and charisma were a given because we all wanted to keep him happy and do our job. However some people didn’t want to stay over extra hours so at times it really didn’t work for them.
