Essay 1: Co-ed or single-sex education?

Assignment Description

Choose one of the 4 assignments/discussion questions below and write a short essay (1-2 pp). Use information from our class discussions, your paragraphs on Education/the importance of education and your narrative paragraph on your educational experience, Chapter 2 of Raise the Issues (Background reading, p. 20; Katherine Ferguson’s commentary – CD & pp. 24-27; Wendy Kaminer’s “The Trouble with Single-Sex Schools”) and the information from the two You Tube exerpts you watched and took notes from regarding co-ed vs. single-sex schools and boys vs. girls. Remember to cite any sources you use (it is not necessary, however, to cite yourself!), and work on developing a clear thesis statement, a coherent and well-structured essay body, and an effective introduction and conclusion. Remember: your opinions are your own. As such, they cannot be wrong, but, at the same time, you cannot leave them unsupported. Be sure to provide reasons for all of your assertions.

Your paper will consist of the following elements:

* Introduction, in which you state the issue and your thesis

* Background paragraph, in which you provide any information necessary to understanding/interpreting your topic:

* 2-3 body additional paragraphs

* Conclusion

Remember to make use of the work you have done leading up to this essay: elements of the paragraphs that you turned in on the importance of education (Fri. Jan. 25) and your narrative experience of cultural attitudes education (Tues. Jan. 29) could likely fit into your introduction or your background paragraphs, depending on your choice of topic and thesis.

In-process due dates – all drafts due in printed version IN CLASS:

* Tues. Feb. 5: draft with highlighted working thesis + outline/essay map + brainstorming (these are listed in reverse order of execution) + 1 specific element that you...
