How to Answer Case Study Assignments
A. Purpose: Case studies are a vital part of this course and they serve several purposes:
(1) They encourage you to apply the information in the course to the real world.
(2) They allow you to see how the separate systems are functionally integrated.
(3) They foster critical thinking skills and help you achieve a deeper understanding.
B. Completing the Case Study: Here are some hints on how to complete the case study:
1. Read the case study and the questions being asked. Try to answer the questions based on your knowledge, experience and common sense. Note any terms or concepts that you don’t understand.
2. Research the problem. Most of the cases deal with concepts that are fully discussed in the textbook, so, read the book (and/or Applications Manual). Sometimes the information you need is not in the current chapter, but instead is in a future (or past) chapter. After you have read what the book describes, go on to other resources. Since many of these are medical in nature, some good on-line resources include: Merckmanaul.com ,WebMD.com, and Mayo Clinic.com.
BE SURE TO NOTE ALL REFERENCES. Google is a good search engine, but do not use Wikipedia as a reference source.
3. Answer the case study questions IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Think about what your references tell you about the case study and then answer the question. DO NOT QUOTE and do not simply paraphrase what others have to say. Copying and paraphrasing without referencing is a form of cheating called plagiarism. If you are uncertain about what plagiarism is, there are two good resources listed below.
4. There should be sufficient room on the case study form for your answer. If you have to add additional pages, you must clearly repeat the question with your answer. A sheet of paper with the answers, but without the questions will not be accepted.
