One world, One dream

With the progress of human civilization and development of information exchange among human beings, society can become more connected. This progression and development not only occurs in one country, but all over the whole world. Famine and natural disaster are two big problems that happened around the world. For example, the famine in Africa, the tsunami in Indonesia, and the earthquake in Wenchuan, China are current problems. When those areas suffering from the invasion of hunger or disaster, people from all over the world will be concerned and give blessings to those who are being affected. Also, some singers will write charity songs in order to appeal for more people to help those in need. Two charity songs will be compared and contrasted. The first song is “Do They Know It’s Christmas” written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in 1984 to raise money for the relief of the 1983–1985 famine in Ethiopia (Wikipedia, 2012). Geldof put together a group called Band Aid, consisting of leading British and Irish musicians who were among the most popular of the era. The second song is “We Are The World” which was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. This is also a charity single originally recorded by the super-group United Support of Artists for Africa in 1985. There were 45 famous American singers that joined this group (Wikipedia, 2012). Although “Do They Know It’s Christmas” and “We Are The World” are charity songs with the same main ideas and both of them have repetition, they differ in the objections and perspectives.

The most common point of these two songs is that they are both charity songs, which express the famine in Africa. “Do They Know It’s Christmas” is a song to raise money for relief of famine in Africa by the British singers.
