1. “Through my eyes: Are we all really equal?”

When I was first asked to answer this question without even a second thought I was adamant on my answer, “No, we are not all really equal”.

As I further researched the topic and looked at it more into detail, removing emotion out of the equation- my views slowly changed.

The one thing I began to understand as I got more into depth-equality does not mean similarity.

In the society we live in unfair discrimination, racism, capitalism, sexism, religious- beliefs and prejudice believes are of the norm. We have all fallen victim to these social injustices at one time or the other. We often feed into these stereotypes. In our eyes this makes us different. I agree. We are not all born with the same opportunities; we are not born into the same races; cultures or even with the same sexuality.

Even though we are all not the same, we are all equal. We are all born, we all live and we all die. It’s a given.

Our Constitution is there to protect us. Chapter two of our Constitution contains the Bill of Rights. Every citizen is born with the same basic rights. The Bill of rights protects the civil, political and socio-economic rights of every South African. Each and every citizen is entitled to being treated fairly, respectfully and with dignity.

We however need to also remember even though we are all born with rights. Every right comes with a responsibility.

It is our responsibility to exercise our rights and respect the rights of others. We need to accept that even though we may not be the same, we are all really equal.
