Traveling to the inner heart of a city or some may like to announce it as “The Ghetto” is the part of a town, especially a slum area, occupied by minority groups. It means experiencing life. To see what parts of the world really has to offer. To also understand the life of people in such places, it is more than just violent and troubling cultures. It is home to the people that live there. That is why people go around and tour the ghetto, from within the states to internationally. It will be viewed as not just crime capitals but places that have meaning of rich culture and expression. The term was used for the first time back in the early 80’s to mid-2000s. With the spread of hip-hop culture, more and more people became curious about the places where this specific genre of music and lifestyle began (Jones, 2010). In the past few years, the American ghettos of Detroit, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles have become tourist spots in the United States, mostly because of young people interested in this specific lifestyle, graffiti, music, and clothing, and it has now grown internationally. Although someone’s idea of vacation might call for staying far away as possible from the ghetto, others have a big interest for going into the slum areas to help out the ones that are in need of help. Whether it is called slum tours or poverty tours, more travelers are interested in seeing the real parts of the world and local areas that surround them. According to BET news article, Churches in Harlem, New York wants people to come to their city to praise with them and to come and explore the exciting other side of New York, (Aziz 2014). Some make known that people go on ghetto tours because of their musical background and additionally to experience the run down area of a city.
