Characteristics of Diatoms | Similarities Between Diatoms and Dinoflagellates | Characteristics of Dinoflagellates |

Most abundant type of photosynthetic organism in the ocean. Has a tough outer shell called a fosstule to protect the inside. Found in the phootic zone of the ocean. Has 2 shapes called the pennate and centric shapes. Pennate usually have long extensions or markings that come off in right angles. Most pennates are benthic meaning they're found at the bottom and attached to organisms. Centric are shaped like circles, trianges, or rectangles. Most centric are planktonic meaning they're free floating. Found in all aquatic environments. | Neither are considered plants and are single celled organisms. They both play a very important role in the marine food web. They are the main source of food for animals as small as zooplankton and are apart of the diet of animals as big as paleen whales. They are major producers of atmospheric oxygen as well as help remove carbon dioxide from the air. Even after they die, they sink and add to the productivity of the ocean. | The second most abundant primary producer in the ocean. They are considered protists. They have 2 whip-like structures that help them move called flagella. Almost all dinoflagellates are found in the ocean but some are found in freshwater. Many exist by living in other organisms such as coral and sea anemones. Red tide is the name of large blooms of dinoflagellates. When red tide reproduce in large amounts during warm weather, the water turns red. This brings harmful effects to the animals and humans that eat the animals, due to the toxins that are released. |
