Chapter One:
1. Explain Billy Graham’s crisis with doubt. How did he resolve it? Graham decided to accept the Bible as God’s Word by faith even though he could not intellectually explain his basis for trusting God and Scripture in certain areas. Even though Graham still had unanswered questions, Christ’s total trust in Scripture helped give him peace.
2. Why is doubting Christianity a serious matter? Doubting God’s existence and Jesus’ lordship has eternal consequences. Not being open in discussion to the issue of doubt weakens the church. Doubt also reveals a shallow intellectual and spiritual foundation of many church members that needs to be addressed.
3. Why is it beneficial to understand the role of doubt in relation to faith? Understanding this role is conducive to the ministry of evangelism and discipleship, helping a church to lead seekers into believers and strengthening the faith of those who are already in the church. Understanding doubt also helps prepare us to understand questions that occur in our daily lives.
4. List some myths about doubt. Doubt is insignificant, rare, sin, and unbelief. Biblical leaders and Christians never have doubts. Doubt is a virtue and cannot lead to spiritual growth.
5. State the essential idea of doubt. Doubt shows a divisive mind and uncertainty about a person or statement.
6. List Greek words for doubt and the basic idea of each. Diakrino means being indecisive between different choices. Dipsychos is having a divided mind that pulls an individual in two ways that leads them to a double life. Distazo means hesitating because of reservations This is when your faith is effective enough to motivate you but not sustain you.
7. When are questions and doubts beneficial in the learning process? It is beneficial when it motivates us to search for truth, refining our beliefs by showing weaknesses or blind spots in our thinking....
