Auto Guys

The first thing, which can be considered a failure, occurred during the planning part. They failed to measure the size, difficulty and price of the project plus the time required to implement it properly. The other major failure was the lack of communication with top management, which led to them deciding to replace the implemented model, which albeit being new and useful, proved to be discomforting. They tried to use a “cutting edge” technology, but with no required knowledge and no support from the management they should have opted for something more reliable and traditional. Unclear expectations and lack of communication sums up what went wrong in Auto Guys’ data warehousing project.

The article tells us quite clearly how failure could have been avoided: with support from top management, with the use of proven technology instead of trying a new one, and with the proper management of expectations.

Similarly to the previous article the main reason for failure of the data warehousing project was the lack of communication. First of all the deadline set wasn’t reasonable at all, though it wasn’t communicated. The funds available were only enough for the implementation of the project, not for maintaining, improving and tweaking the system. Additionally a number of technical difficulties arose, because the system the project was based upon has changed with the ones working on it unaware of the situation.

Proper communication would have helped to avoid failure. The deadline would have been reasonable, the level of the project would have been in sync with the funds available and most importantly they would not have changed the system which the project was based on - making it useless basically.
