Milena Canonero

Milena Canonero is an Italian costume designer, working for films and stage productions. She is 64 and has tree Academy Awards and two BAFTA Awards for Best Costume Design, and she was nominated for eight times.

Milena studied art in Italy, design history and costume design. After she finished the studies, she moved to England, where she had her first jobs, working in theatres and film productions.

Her first important work as a costume designer was in “A Clockwork Orange” by Stanley Kubrick, she continued working with him in “Barry Lyndon”, for which she won her first Oscar. Her third oscar she got, was for the famous movie “Marie Antoinette”

Milena designed also costumes for operas (Il trittico, As You Like It, Die Fledermaus, Arabella.

“Marie Antoinette”, written and directed by Sofia Coppola, is based on the life of the Queen consort in the years leading up to the French Revolution.

The movie is about Maria Antonia Josepha Joanna (Kirsten Dunst), a beautiful fourteen year old but a naïve one, youngest daughter of Austrian empress Maria Theresa (Marianne Faithfull), who has chosen Maria’s second cousin to marry her. The Dauphin of France, Louis XVI, to establish an alliance between the two rival countries.

Action takes place in the Palace of Versailles, Paris Opera and at the Belvedere in Vienna.

Milena Canonero and six assistant designers created the gowns, hats, suits and prop costume pieces. Ten rental houses were also employed, and the wardrobe unit had seven transport drivers. Shoes were made by Manolo Blahnik and Pompei, and hundreds of wigs and hair pieces were made by Rocchetti & Rocchetti.

I have chosen Milena Canonero because of the movie Marie Antoinette. I was amazed by the costumes, I like this period, baroque, rococo, in the 18th century, known for its rich dresses, corsets, big hairstyles, sensitive colors, architectures and the Louis seize furniture style, music etc.
