The article gives a brief description of how many occurrences of workplace violence take place each year. These incidents include robberies, frustrated clients and customers, disgruntled coworkers and former co-workers. The article also gives a brief description of some warning signs as well as ways to prevent them from happening.

The article describes that there are over 1 million occurrences of workplace violence reported each year. While workplace violence started gaining awareness and tracked by the government in the early 1990’s, no statistical background information was recorded which would have allowed the proactive development of programs and policies. It wasn’t until OSHA and other state level programs were instituted that tracked employees that were injured or killed in the workplace due to workplace violence. It also lists certain incidents such as employees assaulting other coworkers as well as customers.

The article describes examples of workplace violence which is any physical assault occurring where an employee performs their work performing any of their duties. It lists the types of jobs that are most prone to work place violence such as duties that include the exchange of money, delivery of passengers, goods or services, working alone or in small numbers and also working in high crime areas.
