Lab One: Graphing with Excel 97

A. Introduction 1. The purpose of this lab is for you to become familiar with Microsoft Excel 97 graphing capabilities. Note: Other spreadsheets may be used but the procedures will differ from these. 2. You will follow a step-by-step guide on using Excel. 3. This lab is completely computer based and requires no outside materials. B. Graphing with Excel 1. This table represents data you collected on a vehicle as it moved in a straight line. Time Distance 0.0 0 0.1 2 0.2 4 0.3 6 0.4 8 0.5 11 0.6 15 0.7 20 0.8 26 0.9 33 1.0 41 2. To plot the data in a spreadsheet such as Excel, enter the data, highlight (select)the column headings and data then start the chart wizard (from the menu use Insert, Chart). For chart type select XY Scatter. For the chart subtype select Data Point Connected by Lines. Click on Finish to place the chart on your spreadsheet. 3. Add a column to the table for velocity and calculate the velocity using the spreadsheet. Dividing the distance traveled by the time it took gives velocity. Assuming time is in cell A1 and 0.0 is in A2, enter the formula for velocity in cell C2= B2/A2 then copy the formula down into the remaining cells. Lab One: Page 2 Time Distance Velocity Since in this instance A2 is 0, it 0.0 0 C2=B2/A2 would be best just to enter 0 to 0.1 2 C3=B3/A3 avoid an error. 0.2 4 0.3 6 0.4 8 0.5 11 0.6 15 0.7 20 0.8 26 0.9 33 1.0 41 4. Plot the Velocity vs. time graph. The procedure is similar to above BUT highlight only the time and velocity columns. This is done by holding down the Ctrl key and dragging down the time column then keeping the Ctrl key down, drag down the velocity column. Release the mouse and Ctrl key. Both the time and velocity columns should be highlighted and ready to make another XY plot. Copy your charts into a Word document by highlighting the chart, right clicking the chart and choosing the Copy option, then Paste the chart into Word. Save the file (replace lastname with your last...
