My first year at university was on the whole a good year however there were some major plus points and drawbacks. I started the year with a very positive attitude towards getting work done and to maintaining full attendance. I kept this up for quite a while however it soon became easy for me to miss the odd lecture and tutorial and this problem began to get worse. There was no real monitoring system for attendance and as we were informed that the first year of the course did not count towards a degree the pressure to do really well was kind of removed and I think I, as well as others, decided that the first year would be ok with a pass and to not really try my best. I realise now that this is a problem because I do not want to fall into a similar pattern in my 2nd and 3rd years as they are very important. This was not the only problem I encountered on my first year. The blackboard system was something that annoyed me a bit because a lot of lecturers did not use it and so if a lecture was cancelled we couldn’t find out about it till we had already arrived at uni. This happened on a number of occasions and it was quite frustrating as I travel quite a bit to get here.

I found the work load a lot less than I thought it would be. I expected that when I came to uni I would have an assignment due in every week however it was not the case. We had one major assignment for each subject and then an exam. This was a nice surprise for me because a lot of work makes me panic especially cause I leave it all to the last minute. The lecturers were all very helpful and some of them were nice to just talk to if I was struggling with work or not understanding something. There were some though that I found a bit boring or that were too ridged in the way they taught and this made it hard to focus on what they were saying especially first thing in the morning. On the whole though they were a good set of teachers and I’m happy I have some of them again this year.
