Literacy:

The Importance of Literacy in the 21st Century and the Upcoming Generations.

Education is supposed to inspire students to go research their interest. Instead that is what the internet does and education and school, is just getting in the way. The growing importance of literacy in the 21st century is more important than ever. Many do not even know the definition of literacy. Literacy means the ability to read and write. This includes reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. All of these are essential in the ongoing work force. In this century with all of the technology and advances, literacy is becoming a thing put aside in education and the lives of thousands of people. Even the simplest of things such as reading the directions to a paper or reading the newspaper are being ignored. More and more people are stopping their journey through literacy.

Reading and writing is a key component in today’s world. Without that ability normal, common life would be utter chaos. The world literally, could not function in any part of their lives without it. The importance of literacy is to not just to be literate, but to enjoy it, use it, and use it wisely. Just knowing how to read and write correctly is not good enough. Society needs to be able to use it in an advanced way and not just getting by like many try to do. The point is to realize the importance of being literate “Reading is the key. Without it, the instructions for playing Monopoly, the recipe for Grandma’s lasagna, The Cat in the Hat, the directions to the job interview, the Psalms, the lyrics to Stairway to Heaven—all these and a lifetime of other mysteries large and small may never be known” (Sedita). This is a fundamental example of why being literate is so important. Where would society be without the recipe for Grandma’s lasagna? The skill of being literate is one of the most important things in the ongoing work force....
