Distraction?

In a society where almost everyone over the age of thirteen carries a cell phone, many schools have banned these items from school grounds. It is because many say it’s due to the “potential problems", such as texting during classes. Others say it is because they interrupt the learning environment. But little do they know that students need their cell phones to keep in touch with their parents, school purposes, and in case of emergencies. With this said, cell phone use should be permitted on high campuses.

Obviously, cell phones are a huge distraction in class because students rather text their friends than pay attention to their students. But with cell phones being able to be used in class, students can keep in touch with their parents and vice-versa. For instance, if a student forgot his homework at home, he or she can text his or her parent to bring it to school so they can turn it in. A student can also call home and ask a family member to come pick them up if they are sick. Cell phones also allow parents to keep track of their children’s whereabouts before, during, and after school. Students can also connect with friends, but not just because it’s a fun thing to do; when one the student’s friend is absent, it is good for the teacher to tell the student to tell their friend what’s going on in class and inform them of any homework. When used responsibly, a cell phone can be an excellent communication tool.

Additionally, cell phones, especially smart phones, are a great learning resource and an amazing way to save paper. Students can use tools such as the calculator, the map finder, and even the calendar. For instance, in math class when a student doesn’t have access to a calculator, the student can pull out his or her phone and use the calculator.
