EXT. CITY – BACKYARD – SUNSET

LUCAS (Teens, brooding, has an obvious hand injury) sits on the porch of his own backyard, stares off in slight deep thought. He holds his hand, which is currently in a cast.

BETH (Teens, sympathetic, artistic) enters. She goes unnoticed until she takes a seat next to Lucas, her best friend. His head shoots up surprised, continued silence.

BETH

Hey.

Lucas

Oh, hey.

They continue to sit, neither beginning conversation. A sulky awkwardness.

Beth

Your dad let me in.

LUcas

Yea. I figured

Beth

How are you?

Lucas

I’m okay.

He is short and blank, not in the mood for talking.

Beth

Your hand?

He lifts his hand, inspecting it, like he doesn’t already know. He shrugs it off, trying not to make a big deal, hiding his sincere feelings about the subject.

Lucas

Uh, it’s fine.

Beth stares at Lucas, he knows that she knows he’s lying. A beat. He forces a half laugh. She continues to stare at him.

I’m sorry. It’s just-

Beth

No, don’t apologize. I shouldn’t have been bothering you like that.

Lucas

You’re fine, don’t worry.

A gaze passes between them. They’re all right.

Beth

So it’s kinda been a while.

Lucas

It has. I haven’t seen you since- the um-

Beth

Since the accident?

Lucas

Yea that, sorry, my dad told me you’ve been stopping by.

Beth

I just wanted to see you, to see how you’ve been doing after all that stuff happened.

Lucas

I know. I just didn’t want to see anyone. Not then anyways.

Beth

She looks down and somewhat whispers

Not even me? Not even your best friend?

Lucas

No, I was upset, in a pretty bad place. I didn’t want you to see me.

Beth

She is hurt, but she pushes her personal feelings aside.

It’s okay. I guess I understand.

She passes her sight from his hand to his face. Both caused her worry. She is scared for...
