Learning Objective: Given information about the early Renaissance era, students will be able to explain the importance of Florence and other Italian city-states in the spread of ideas.

Feudalism and Transistions.6. The renaissance in Europe introduced revolutionary ideas, leading to cultural, scientific, social changes.

Hook:
Time: 3 minutes
Students will watch a 3 minute video provided by the discovery channel that introduces the Italian Renaissance.

Time: 30 minutes
Activity: Introduce the Renaissance and main ideas of section 1. Main ideas/people include Marco Polo
Four major trade cities: Primarily Florence, but also Genoa, Milan, and Venice
Medeci Family and their contributions to society.
The study of humanities during the Renaissance.
Time: Guided Practice below is included in the 30 minutes above
Guided Practice:
During this time students will take guided notes on a handout provided while viewing the power point.
Time: 10 minutes
Activity:
Students will take a virtual tour of Florence Italy. I will talk about the architecture and art within Florence and how Italian art, literature, and culture spread renaissance ideas throughout Europe.

I will also discuss how Florence has a present day influence by presenting images of the Kent State University Campus in Florence and its contribution to the architecture program.
