Decision Making Process

July 24 2001 was the year I joined the military. I was scheduled to depart to training in December of 2001 but in September of 2001 my life changed and was sent on a warp speed movement towards a new world. Nine years later in 2010 I would be faced with a decision that changed not only my life but the lives of my loved ones as-well.

6 years earlier

It started with a 4am brief about our convoy. It was 2004 and I was 4 ½ months into a 15 month deployment. We were rolling out at 07:00 am and I was prepping my turret and my station for a 2-3 hour convoy. 07:00 am came and before I knew it we were on our way, driving a down a route that in 4 ½ months have driven a dozen times. We pass civilians in cars, walking, pushing their cattle, some say hi and wave others don’t. It was 08:45am and I was looking at an over pass, I blinked, when I opened my eyes had tubes and I.V’s in my arms.

The Month Before

October 2010 I was waiting to hear the results of an MRI. After years of appointments and rehabilitation I was finally told that I only had 2 options, surgery or discharge. Surgery would remove any basic movement and would put me paired up with a cane.

The Decision

It was early November; I pondered the decision for almost a month. I knew what the problem was whether or not I wanted surgery. I wrote out every solution by working with my wife to figure the pros and cons about the surgery. I came to a realization about my choices. The only other option was to leave a place that was my home for the beginning of my adult life. On the second week of November I made the choice to not go through with the surgery and move on with my second option, to leave. November 20 2010 was my final day in the military.
