Sexual Behavior

I. Introduction

Sexual behavior may be the most important of all human activities. It is the process by which the species is reproduced; it is the central behavior around which the families are formed, and it is a key component in the emotional lives of individuals (Smith). In human sexual behavior, promiscuity refers to having multiple sexual partners in the absence of any commitment. In the United States, a 2007 national survey had the following results: the median number of lifetime partners reported by men was seven; the number of lifetime partners reported by women was four. It could be possible that men exaggerated their number of partners and women reported a number lower than the actual number (Wikipedia, 2011). Sexual behavior and activity has become more predominate within the community of young people. By their late teenage years, at least three-fourths of all men and women have had intercourse, and more than two-thirds of all sexually experienced teens have had two or more partners. “In all, 63 percent of female respondents and 64 percent of male respondents were sexually experienced. There are many reasons or an explanation to why this is so, but where does the solution come to perspective. This particular paper examines whether there are associations between demographic variables such as age, sex, race, education and multiple sex partners one has had.

II. Statement of Problem

Sexually transmitted diseases flourish in a society of premarital sex, where people have multiple sexual partners. Having multiple sexual partners represents an important risk factor among adolescents and young adults, especially if they fail to use condoms correctly. Most teenagers do not have multiple concurrent sexual partners; however many adolescent relationships are short, teenagers often have multiple sequential partners (Santelli, 1998)
