Self-Esteem

Self-esteem can be described as the way you feel about yourself and how you feel about yourself. This can include many things from, how you feel about your appearance, job, your financial situation, and essentially how you stand in your life on an everyday basis. Many people want the approval of others and can be very competitive with other people.

Pursuit of self-esteem can be harmful to individuals if you think too much of yourself and become over confident and start to get boastful and arrogant. This can happen from people filling you full of yourself all your life and never coming to the realization that you have faults as well as other people in society. The reason this can be harmful is because you it can cause problems in relationships and friendships when you cannot see past yourself and put other people in front of you at times. Pursuit of self-esteem can cause disruptions in the ability to fulfill needs for belongingness and happiness.

There are sometimes that threats to self-esteem can be helpful because it shows that we make mistakes and we are not perfect all the time. Threats to self-esteem thrown by other people can sometimes be used as useful feedback to improve learning about something or yourself. Yes, it can bring a person down but in the same second that person and want to prove you wrong when you threaten them with not being smart or pretty. This can sometimes take a long time to do and not everyone has this mindset; however, it is a powerful characteristic.
