ENKANINI - Cape Town's largest informal settlement with over 11000 informal households. Enkanini is a fairly new community that sprung in 2008 following backyarders’ weariness to live in the overcrowded communities of Khayelitsha. This large community forms part of Ward 95. Enkanini is adjacent to a municipal sewerage works – the name of the location meaning ‘to live by force’ as the residents claimed there was no space elsewhere for them to go, having no choice but to stay opposite the sewerage works. Ward 95 makes an interesting case study in that a lot of dynamics are at play. Enkanini is a fairly new community which came about in an unconventional manner. Traces of development have been observed but a lot still needs to be done concerning the development of the area and providing people with decent basic services that are entitled to them. The purpose of this case study is to investigate various aspects of service provision in this area.

Enkanini is situated near by Khayelistha, a partially informal township in Western Cape South Africa, located on the Cape Flats in the City of Cape Town. The coordinates of the location are 34°3'33"S 18°42'13"E.

Enkanini is large set of informal settlements that developed in 2008. Enkanini is part of Ward 95, which also includes slivers of Kuyasa and Makhaza. A year ago 7600 dwellers of Khayelitsha’s Enkanini squatter camp were moved onto their own properties in neighbouring Zwelitsha to make way for an extension to the Khayelitsha – Cape Town railway line. Each household was provided with an enclosed toilet and were to get title deeds to the land they’re on. It is one of Khayelitsha’s poorest and fastest-growing areas.
