Are Political Parties Beneficial or Detrimental?

Political parties are both beneficial and detrimental, having democrat and republican politicians are needed to create a balance within the political system. Without political parties the United States would become a dictatorship or anarchy. By utilizing political parties society is free to voice their concerns, listen to each politician and the changes he/she strive to make. The people of society are able to consider the issues at hand and vote for the political party that fits both his/her needs, morals, ethical code, and/or who they believe is best qualified for the job.

Political parties can unite a diverse group of people. People that otherwise would never associate are brought together for the better good of society. The political parties help to explain the issues and abridge the choices voters have to make in elections. The government is held accountable for their actions, if an individual or group of people does not approve of the way a politician is managing his/her city, they can either vote for someone else or take the necessary steps to have that person removed.

Political parties are often the yoke between the different branches of the United States government, plus the three levels of government- federal, state, and local. They empower politicians to form coalitions by getting things done.

Most of our elections are decided by a plurality vote compared to a majority vote. Sponsorship by a major party gives candidate access to massive resources (money, publicity, and campaign propaganda), that he/she may not have had before running for office.

Political parties may be viewed as detrimental due to both parties not compromising, when not done it leads to a weak legislation. In recent years, people...
