Selecting the appropriate the flight Controller and GPS module is an imperative step when building a mission orientated Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). When putting together an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), there are many component options to choose from,so selecting the correct component should depend on the application of the UAV. According to the outback challenge, the operator is required to be able to get off of autopilot and switch into manual mode. After some research and brainstorming, I have decided that the best options for this assignment will be 3DM-RQ1 -45 GPS from Lord MicroStrain Sensing System and the Turnigy 9X 9Ch Transmitter with Module & 8ch Receiver. In this paper I will discuss the features that made these two components the top choice for the “outback Joe” challenge assignment.

The flight controller in an unmanned aircraft is imperative for a successful mission. The flight controller is comprised from the actual transmitter (hand held controller) and the receiver (on board the UAS) which receives commands from the transmitter. This provides a safety feature and backup option in case there is a failure with the autopilot. In the event that the auto pilot fails, the flight controller and receiver will allow the operator to take control of the aircraft and be able to complete the mission or to divert the aircraft to a safe location where it can be retrieved. For the “Outback Joe” challenge, I took into consideration, first and foremost the price of the flight controller since there is strict budget to adhere to. Due to the nature of the mission and the restrictions imposed by the rules handbook, I also found it necessary to choose a flight controller with long range as it provides as much as 3000 meters.
