a. Religion, Language (language defines how we view certain things, i.e idioms), Family, Clothing, Food

2. Sub-Culture
e. Ethnic groups are subcultures
f. Traits or characteristics that group people within cultures
g. Ethnic groups share traits/characteristics that are culturally, they have a sense of “we-ness”
i. Ethnocentric: evaluate what we see through our ethnic experiences, changes how you view the world, the root of racism. not being ethnocentric would prevent you from having pride in your own culture
ii. Ascription: Being born into an ethnicity
iii. Territoriality: Ethnic groups feel connected because their ancestors were born in the same place
3. Pluralism (multiple ethnicities)

j. Ethnic stratification: Some groups are valued more than others, racism possibly? Minority groups are the the bottom of the social hierarchy
iv. Cubans ---> Mexicans ----> Puerto Ricans
v. Ideology: generational, groups move up the hierarchy due to a long presence, factors of assimilation
vi. Refugee act: 1950s/60s, enacted to help get rid of communism, wanted refugees to come from Cuba to US to promote democracy
4. Minority group definition: minorities are not based off of the size of the group, but access to power. population is irrelevant
5. Ideology: justification of ideas and the status
