Week 1 response:

Section One - Write a 250- to 350-word original response to the following prompt:

What is Critical Thinking?

In our daily lives, we will come across many situations where we will have the opportunity to look at what has been said in a critical and objective way. “We think critically when we evaluate the reasoning we (and others) use in coming to a conclusion about something.” (What is Critical Thinking Anyway? Page 25)

I think that the vast majority of interactions that we have on a daily basis lack common sense or critical thinking on one or both parties. Most people approach conversations with their own frame of reference and individual biases. For example, I recently moved to Nevada, a mostly hot and arid place with little or no rain from Michigan, a state with lots or humidity and plenty of precipitation (and snow in the winter). When I speak to people native to Nevada, they complain about the heat and lack of rain. I disagree about the heat and argue that rain and snow is less enjoyable to live in. I am biased that my new environment is better. I am not looking at it critically and objectively trying to see both sides of the story.

I like to use the term Devil’s Advocate. When presenting my views and then listening to the other person’s side I try to play Devil’s Advocate and ask the other person to see things from a side they might not necessarily want to. But this does get the discussion moving to a more objective and critical point of view.
