ABSTRACT OF THE RESEARCH

In the Philippines, informal settlements have been a major part of many cities. Squatter’s areas have been in existence for a very long time. It was dated back in the late 1800s. Some problems that the people living in an informal settlement have to face are poverty, hunger, high environmental and health risks, and crime. Migration has been increasing in most urban areas and this only worsens the situation.

According to National Statistics Office, Manila is now roughly 16 million. This is declared as the world’s 11th most populated city. Also, according to the report conducted by the Asian Development Bank during 2010, 35% of Manila is composed of informal settlers.

This study aims to examine the effects of informal settlement in our country. Also, this research examined the problems that pose greater threat to the people living in slums. They also set the stage for the tangle of legal disputes that continue to beset the nation today. This study will show the dynamics in informal settlements, which play an important impact in the community and in the country as well. These challenges may result multiple risk that underlines the need for effective approaches and solutions.

INTRODUCTION

Skyscraper buildings, high-end companies, men in suit and tie, flashing lights – we can all find these mostly in urban areas. Cities are considered gateways of opportunities. Companies, international or local, will definitely build their own versions of empires. This is a prospect to opening of more and better jobs. Urban areas like Manila have always been an instrument for improving the quality of living and the country as well. Undeniably, they have contributed to the major change in the economy of the country while we’re making a gradual action to improvement. However, one thing that changed the whole piece of urban areas is the urban poor. This appears to be a sign of the major transformation of the future.
