Description of Business Audience

My audience is a group of restaurant operations managers of a fortune 500 company that owns multiple restaurant chains that haven’t implemented any automation in their operations.

Introduction

Ask the audience a question regarding human interaction in restaurants. Orient them with a summary of how most people answer that question. Share with them who I am. Introduce the problems restaurants are facing and explain the credible sources used.

Thesis Statement

Automation is becoming more popular with restaurant industry employers due to offsetting costs and a possible higher profit margin.

Body of Outline

I. The restaurant industry has consistently shown growth in multiple avenues over the last 15 years.

A. Sales growth has increased 6 years in a row.

1. Sales have grown from $543 billion in 2007 to $659.31 billion in 2013.

2. Average growth rate is holding at 3% per year.

B. Employment growth has topped total U.S. employment growth rate for 15 years in a row.

1. The restaurant industry is the second largest private sector employer.

2. 10% of working Americans are employed in the restaurant industry.

II. Operating costs for the industry continue to rise shrinking already low profit margins.

A. Wholesale food costs have been increasing steadily over the last four years.

1. Over the past 12 months, prices have risen 1.7% and projections show 2014 will have a significant increase as well.

2. 1/3 of a restaurant’s revenue goes toward food and beverage costs.

B. Labor costs are a huge challenge for the industry.

1. The Affordable Care Act has put a strain on employers required to provide healthcare.

2. Potential minimum wage increases have the potential to double employee’s pay.
