Governance in Sport

During our first class meeting, we gained a general knowledge of what Governance in Sport is about and what the class would consist of. After the introduction to the class, we began working on our career portfolio. This provided you with information about us including a short bio, why we chose Sport Management, our strengths and weaknesses, and our short/long range goals. During the course introduction we were informed that we would have a guest speaker come each week to talk with us. The guest speaker for the day was Steve Brooks.

Brooks provided us with information pertaining to his life and how he got started in his profession he is currently in. He grew up in Frankfort, Kentucky and attended Kentucky State University where he played basketball for the Thorobreds. During his career there Steve met many people. The people he met ranged from in-state to out-out-state, including many athletes. Some of the athletes were currently participating or had participated at the professional level. He formed strong relationships with a lot of those people and at one point he even drove around Happy Chandler who was a two time governor, U.S. Senator, second commissioner of Major League Baseball, and a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. I found this to be very interesting.

Brooks has been involved with a lot throughout his life and all over the state of Kentucky. He helped bring the girls state basketball tournament to Frankfort, started fast pitch softball because scholarships had previously not been available, and helped with the start of the Capital City Museum. He has obviously been involved with a lot. However, the main thing he is involved with is our state parks. He is a professional in Parks and Recreation. He has been the director for 39 years.
